Técnica y lenguaje en el diseño del mobiliario de Aino y Alvar Aalto

Abstract

Desde la unión de Aino-Marsio y Alvar Aalto como pareja profesional, el Modernismo y Funcionalismo finlandés ocupó un puesto relevante en el panorama internacional de su época. El diseño de mobiliario se encuentra muy presente a lo largo de la trayectoria de esta pareja. Prestan gran atención a su desarrollo técnico y productivo, a las formas ya los materiales. Buscan la armonía en su entorno, ofreciendo productos locales al mercado internacional. El sillón 41 ‘Paimio’, el taburete 60 ‘L-leg’, el jarrón ‘Savoy’, la colección de cristalería ‘Bölgeblick’ y lalámpara A331 ‘Colmena’, son los casos de estudio más relevantes que ejemplifican su obra. Las investigaciones plásticas que realizan con la madera se ven reflejadas también en sus obras de arquitectura. Bajo la firma AAA, este tándem de arquitectos firmaba sus proyectos, aunque la A de Aino ha quedado relegada al olvido durante mucho tiempo. Mediante el Manifiesto de Artek, la pareja de arquitectos Aino-Marsio y Alvar Aalto muestran sus intenciones en la creación de su mobiliario; por una parte lograr una síntesis de las artes y mejorar la vida cotidiana de las personas y por otra parte llevar el Modernismo a Finlandia. Artek fue la empresa que fundaron en 1935 los Aalto, una firma dedicada a la creación de accesorios, iluminación y mobiliario, en los que combinaban arte y técnica. A través de esta plataforma estos diseñadores comercializaban los diseños que en años anteriores habían empezado a producir para amueblar algunas obras concretas de su arquitectura, como el sillón ‘Paimio’ para el Sanatorio Antituberculoso. Tras 85 años de su fundación, aún se siguen produciendo y vendiendo. Estos iconos del mobiliario se han convertido en piezas atemporales que siguen amueblando los hogares, a veces con precios mucho más bajos creados por otros diseñadores.

Since the union of Aino-Marsio and Alvar Aalto as a professional couple, Finnish Modernism and Functionalism occupied a relevant position on the international scene of its time. Furniture design is very present throughout the trajectory of this couple. They pay great attention to their technical and productive development, to shapes and materials. They seek harmony in their environment, offering local products to the international market. The armchair 41 ‘Paimio’, the stool 60 ‘L-leg’, the ‘Savoy’ vase, the ‘Bölgeblick’ glassware collection and the pendant light A331 ‘Beehive’, are the most relevant case studies that exemplify their work. The plastic investigations that they carry out with wood are also reflected in their architectural works. Under the AAA signature, this tandem of architects signed their projects, although the A in Aino has been forgotten a long time ago. Through the Artek Manifesto, the pair of architects Aino-Marsio and Alvar Aalto show their intentions in creating their furniture; on the one hand to achieve a synthesis of the arts and improve the daily life of the people and on the other hand to bring Modernism to Finland. Artek was the company that was founded in 1935 by Aalto, a brand dedicated to the creation of accessories, lighting and furniture, in which they combined art and technique. Through this platform these designers commercialized the designs that in previous years they had begun to produce to furnish some specific works of their architecture, such as the ‘Paimio’ armchair for the Tuberculosis Sanatorium. After 85 years of its founding, they are still being produced and sold. These furniture icons have become timeless pieces that continue to furnish homes, sometimes at much lower prices created by other designers.
