Dataset language: Spanish & English 2. Abstract: This research project aims to measure and analyze the heterogeneity of university teachers’ conceptions of intelligence. To this end, we have developed a new method of analysis: Heterogeneity by Contradiction Analysis (HCA). We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 university teachers, presenting them with a series of short cases or vignettes depicting different facets of intelligence. Based on the discourse elicited, we first created a category system. Then, we pre-defined a series of possible contradictions among pairs of categories. Using these pre-defined contradictions, a systematic sampling of theoretical contradictions could be obtained from the discourse. Finally, a researcher reviewed these sampled contradictions in order to find and code real contradictions, which were later analyzed. 3. Last modification date: 26-06-2020 METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION ----------------------- 1. Description of the methods used to collect and generate the data: A semi-structured interview was designed, called “Views on Intelligence within the Educational Field” (see Interview Script in this Dataset). The instrument comprises short cases or vignettes, highlighting different dimensions of intelligence. We identified 12 relevant dimensions in which a view on intelligence could be expressed and contextualized. They were: Control, Heredity, Effort, Culture, Training, Critical Period, Context, Expectations, Associated Qualities, People, Gender, and Diversity of Intelligence. These dimensions were selected as they have been found to be central to the scientific study of intelligence. They are also relevant in the everyday use of the concept in different contexts, such as media, family, school, etc. In total, 24 short statements about intelligence were developed, two for each of the dimensions. We contacted the participants through email and negotiated the dates for the interviews. All the interviews were held in the teachers’ own offices in Spanish, as it was their mother language. The average duration of the interviews was 31 minutes and lasted as much as one hour. Participants were asked what they thought about each vignette of the interview. In a few situations, if the response was too short or ambiguous in the interviewer’s opinion, participants were asked to clarify or to expand. All participants were encouraged to freely express their opinion about each statement. 2. Data processing methods: A category system was used as a tool for coding the participants’ descriptions and explanations during the interview (see the Coding Manual in this Dataset). A specific type of analysis called Heterogeneity by Contradictions Analysis (HCA) was developed. Using the units of meaning of our system as a base, 165 categories of contradictions were pre-defined by researchers. Each contradiction was defined by two contradictory units of meaning. Two types of contradictions were categorized by taking into account the type of unit of meaning used. If the contradiction was present in two categories referring to the same idea but opposed in the direction of the relationship with intelligence, the contradiction was called Direct Contradiction. In this type of contradiction, the participant explicitly expresses exactly the opposite to something they previously said. The other type of contradiction involves two categories that do not refer to the same idea but should not appear at the same time during the interview by terms of common logic. This kind of contradiction related to coherence was called Coherence Contradiction. 3.
