Estructura y forma, compañeros del viaje de Owen Williams de la ingeniería a la arquitectura

Abstract

Este artículo tiene como hilo conductor la figura de sir Owen Williams (1890-1969), ingeniero y arquitecto. Su obra como ingeniero, con ejemplos de innegable valor como el trazado de la autopista M1 en Inglaterra, se equilibra con sus propuestas arquitectónicas y por ello el análisis de algunos ejemplos permite plantear una reflexión sobre aquello que es específico de ambas profesiones. No se pretende con ello elaborar una teoría para delinear el límite entre arquitectura e ingeniería, sino tratar de reconocer en sus edificios, con mirada de arquitecto, cualidades universales que, en su mayoría, son comunes a ingenieros y arquitectos. Se inicia el texto con la presentación del personaje y al desvelar su posición singular entre los profesionales y críticos de su época se entienden con mayor claridad los motivos de ese voluntario deambular de la arquitectura a la ingeniería. Las obras permiten enmarcar con mayor precisión su figura y dar respuesta a algunas cuestiones. El dominio de los avances tecnológicos y el rigor en el proyecto de estructuras de hormigón, ¿aproximan o distancian a arquitectos e ingenieros? Ser arquitecto e ingeniero al mismo tiempo, ¿enriquece o coarta la concepción, el diseño y el cálculo de las obras? Hombre riguroso, práctico, objeto de polémica y sin duda en todo momento atento a las innovaciones tecnológicas y a las posibilidades de los nuevos materiales. Así fue Owen Williams.

This article uses the figure of Sir Owen Williams (1890-1969), engineer and architect, as a conducting element. His work as an engineer, with examples of undeniable value such as the layout of the M1 motorway in England, balances with his architectural proposals. For that reason, the analysis of some examples of his work allows a reflection on what is specific to both professions. This is not to try to formulate a theory to delineate the limits between architecture and engineering, but to try to recognize in his buildings, from an architect's viewpoint, those universal qualities that are, in the main, common to engineers and architects alike. The article begins with the presentation of the person, who, on having revealed his singular position among the professionals and critics of his time, the reasons for that voluntary stroll from engineering to architecture can be understood with much more clarity. The works allow Williams to be framed more accurately and to give answers to some questions. Do mastery of technological advances and rigour in the planning of concrete structures bring architects and engineers closer together, or drive them further apart? Does being an architect and engineer at the same time enrich or restrict the conception, design and calculation of works? A rigorous, practical man, at the centre of controversy and undoubtedly always alert to technological innovations and the possibilities of the new materials. That was Owen Williams.
