Piedad, cultura y economía en una ciudad europea. Las capellanías en la Sevilla del siglo XVII

Abstract

El objetivo principal de esta investigación es analizar la fundación de capellanías en la Sevilla del siglo XVII. Este tipo de legados fue muy frecuente en el mundo católico de la Edad Moderna y proliferó en diversas áreas dentro y fuera de Castilla a lo largo de los siglos XV al XVIII, aunque se trató de una costumbre muy arraigada en las sociedades del pasado, que se extendió más allá de estas cronologías. Como expresiones de una religiosidad personal y colectiva, las capellanías constituyeron un medio para la consecución de diversos fines espirituales y materiales. La dinámica de estos legados tuvo también consecuencias en el mundo de las relaciones personales y económicas, ya que se vieron sometidos a todo tipo de circunstancias. Por ello, junto con el acto de fundación en sí mismo, esta tesis doctoral aborda la vida y vicisitudes a la que estos legados se vieron sometidos. Para el estudio de esta temática se ha recurrido a diversas fuentes de distintos archivos nacionales e internacionales. El estudio se divide en cuatro bloques. En el primero de ellos se atenderá a la historiografía sobre las capellanías y a la metodología aplicada. En el segundo se tratará el ámbito jurídico y cultural en el que se dieron las fundaciones, atendiendo especialmente al discurso religioso. Seguidamente se procederá al análisis del muestreo documental obtenido sobre la fundación de capellanías en las parroquias de Sevilla, y finalmente se abordarán aspectos relacionados con la vida de estos legados y sus dinámicas a lo largo del tiempo.

The main objective of this research is to analyze the foundation of chaplaincies in Seville in the 17th century. This type of legacies were very common in the Catholic world of the Modern Age and proliferated in various areas inside and outside Castile throughout the 15th to 18th centuries, although it was a deeply rooted custom in past societies, which extended beyond these chronologies. As expressions of personal and collective religiosity, the chaplaincies became ways to achieve all kinds of spiritual and material aims. The dynamics of these legacies also had consequences in personal and economic relationships, since they were subjected to all kinds of circumstances. For this reason, together with the founding act itself, this PhD addresses the life and vicissitudes to which these legacies were subjected. For the study of this subject, various sources from different national and international archives have been used. The study is divided into four blocks. In the first of them, the historiography on chaplaincies and the applied methodology will be addressed. The second will deal with the legal and cultural environment in which the foundations were given, paying special attention to the religious discourse. Next, the analysis of the documentary sample obtained on the foundation of chaplaincies in the parishes of Seville will be carried out, and finally we will study aspects related to the life of these legacies and their dynamics.
